Attackers Exploit VMware vCenter Vulnerability for Persistent Remote Access

Five days after Broadcom shipped the patch, attackers were already using it to break into vCenter servers.

The flaw is CVE-2026-59310, a directory traversal in VMware vCenter Server that lets anyone with network access execute arbitrary code. CVSS 9.8. Broadcom released fixes late last month. German firm QUIRSO found the exploitation during an incident response engagement, and the timeline is ugly: compromised systems started contacting attacker domains on August 3, five days after disclosure. So far they count 361 victim IPs across 47 countries, most in Germany, the US, Turkey, Iran, and France.

The chain is short. Path traversal drops a file, a malicious cron job keeps it alive, and reverse_ssh maintains a tunnel back to attacker infrastructure. That last piece matters. reverse_ssh connects outbound, so it slides past the inbound-focused controls most orgs put in front of vCenter. It is a legitimate open-source admin tool, which is exactly why it works here.

QUIRSO is careful about attribution. reverse_ssh alone is not proof of compromise. Combined with an unauthorized install, unexpected outbound connections, or execution on a vulnerable appliance, it becomes a high-priority indicator. The firm suspects an APT. VMware appliances have been a staple target for Chinese state actors for years, and the same reverse_ssh pattern showed up in SentinelOne's PurpleHaze reporting last year.

The disclosure-to-exploitation gap keeps shrinking. If you have not patched, patch now. If you already did, go hunting: cron jobs you did not create, outbound SSH you did not configure, reverse_ssh binaries on the appliance. Defused Cyber is also logging a scanning spike against the sibling vmdir auth bypass, CVE-2026-59309 (also CVSS 9.8): version probes via POST /sdk/ and walks of the /websso SAML flow. That fingerprinting is what exploitation looks like right before it starts.
